The Real Cost
Attack of the Metallic Menace
Turn the prevention message into an action.
The objective
The Real Cost is a US youth vaping prevention campaign. Fan-community platform Fandom helped connect its message with pop culture.
With 2.1 million US students using e-cigarettes, the campaign needed a health message young people would choose to notice.
The experience
Rising Pixel created “Attack of the Metallic Menace,” an augmented-reality first-person shooter built around protecting lung health.
Players faced incoming shards of metal vapor, making the health warning part of the action.
At San Diego Comic-Con, a QR code opened the experience in a phone browser, with no download required.
The results
The activation made prevention participatory at a major fan convention, giving visitors a direct way to engage with the campaign.
Give event visitors a shared challenge.
Make each attempt part of the event.
A live leaderboard lets visitors compare their scores.
The AR creature responds to players' actions as they compete on site. The prevention theme stays connected to the monster they are trying to defeat.
